Thanos Papathanasopoulos, while still a student, deals with the cultural heritage of Greece, of all eras and artistic currents, starting with the building remains of the Prehistoric Period and reaching church architecture in the years of the Turkish occupation. He worked on the study of the Temple of Epicurious Apollo at Bassae, on the study of part of the northern wall of the Acropolis, on the protection and rehancement of the Theater of Dionysus, on the study and restoration of the Fortress of Pylos, as well as on the protection and rehancement of vaulted tombs in Messinia.
The mother of Thanos Papathanasopoulos Aspasia, from the Aroni family originating from Smyrna, was a professor of philology. His father George, originally from Laconia and Arcadia, was an archaeologist who worked in Pylos, in the excavation of Nestor's palace with Karolos Blegen in charge, Methoni, Pylos and Olympia. From 1970 until the end of his life he directed the excavations of the Neolithic settlement in the cave of Alepotrypa Dirou Mani creating also the Diros Neolithic Museum.
